Limb preservation through surgery and reconstruction
Your surgeon may recommend limb preservation after evaluating factors such as your age and overall health, and the extent and location of the disease or injury. Limb salvage surgery involves removing the affected area and some of the surrounding tissue. After the injury or disease is removed from your bone, your surgeon will reconstruct your limb to restore as much function and aesthetic as possible.
If you have bone or soft-tissue cancer, you may undergo chemotherapy or radiation to shrink the tumor before having limb-salvage surgery.
Recovery after limb preservation
After your surgery, we'll guide you through the recovery process. Recovery includes working with physical therapists to regain strength and as much function as possible. Sometimes, limb-preservation recovery can take longer than other treatment options.
Amputation
Amputation is the surgical removal of a part of the body because of a traumatic injury or disease. While we focus on limb preservation, sometimes it's not possible.
Your doctor may recommend amputation if you have:
- A tumor we can't remove safely
- Experienced severe trauma or injury to your limb
- Poor blood flow in your limb
- Severe burns on your limb
- Wounds on your limbs that won’t heal
